La alúmina fundida marrón es un producto fabricado mediante reducción por fusión gradual de bauxita calcinada en un horno de arco eléctrico a alta temperatura (aproximadamente 2000 grados Celsius). Su composición química consiste principalmente en Al2O3 ( 94,5-97 % ) y cantidades residuales de TiO2 , SiO2 , Fe2O3 , CaO y MgO.
El óxido de aluminio marrón se caracteriza por una buena tenacidad, una alta resistencia mecánica y una dureza de 9 en la escala de Mohs. La microdureza del material alcanza unos 1900 kG/mm 2 . La gravedad específica (densidad) es de 3,90 +/- 0,05 g/cm 3 . La densidad aparente, en función del tamaño, es de 1,52-1,87 g/cm 3 . Tiene una conductividad térmica relativamente alta y una expansión térmica baja. En lo que respecta a la electricidad, es un aislante.

Los polvos de óxido de aluminio fundido de color marrón son el material perfecto, fabricado específicamente para su uso en aplicaciones abrasivas generales en herramientas abrasivas aglomeradas y procesos de lapeado y pulido. Si bien el óxido de aluminio tiene menor dureza y capacidad abrasiva que el diamante, el carburo de boro y el carburo de silicio, se utiliza ampliamente para rectificar materiales ferrosos, dar acabado a materiales duros y resistentes, y rellenar piezas de cerámica cuando el costo de procesamiento es importante.
